Absolutely love this whole thing, but... "It’s like I took a course in my goal last year, and now I’m taking a higher-level course on the way to mastery." This REALLY hit me. I love this way of looking at the things we strive for.

Thanks so much, Elayna! It all applies to writing and NaNoWriMo, of course. I like Chris Baty's quote: "A goal and a deadline are a creative midwife." Best of luck on your goals this year!

Unachieved goals continue to bother us; our achievements fade. For "bother," read "inspire."

I like one meaning of "bother" as "inspire." The most meaningful of our goals bother us.

It's amazing how quickly achievements fade. I always think of a story Robin Williams told. He said that when you win an Oscar, you have one fantastic night of feeling that everyone loves you. Then you carry that glow with you for a few days, each day feeling it fade. Then everything returns to normal. You get maybe 3-4 days of the glow in total. Back to work.
